TGCHS AWARDS A GARDINER YOUNG SCHOLAR GRANT TO A GARDEN CITY STUDENT

The Garden City Historical Society is excited to share the award of a 2nd Gardiner Young Scholar Grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, to another young Garden City student, Bella Splendori!

This Gardiner Grant is a $1,500 grant that is awarded to a Young Scholar (between the ages of 15-22), who has completed 100 hours of service to TGCHS.The Garden City Historical Society selected Bella Splendori as a candidate for this award, as she had a clear interest in the history of Garden City, so much so that she became a volunteer at TGCHS. Plus, she made an amazing model of the Museum for a school assignment!

Bella Splendori, a resident of Garden City, began her work with the Historical Society in June 2023 as a sophomore at the Waldorf School. She worked closely with the TGCHS team to develop both a digital and hard copy inventory/reference book of our vintage garments that have been donated over the years. The overall goal for this project was to evaluate, catalogue, preserve and research these garments so that the Historical Society could provide the ability for a greater viewing of our Garment Collection to the Garden City community and beyond. Bella’s tasks included preparing a fact sheet for each garment, complete with photographs, a description (color, pattern and fabric type) and assigned a call number to each garment along with categorizing these items by garment type for storage purposes. Then, on October 27, 2023, the Garden City Historical Society held a Costume Exhibit for all residents and friends of the Historical Society to view.

Bella worked with Penny Hinderstein, a TGCHS Trustee and project team leader, along with several other TGCHS volunteers on this fascinating project. Bella brought competent computer and photographic skills, organizational talent and a very willing spirit to this project. Penny and her team were very impressed with Bella’s work ethic and her interest in learning along with her very personable nature. Congratulations to Bella Splendori on all her efforts and for being selected as our second winner!

The Garden City Historical Society is extremely grateful to the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation for their continued support and for the opportunity to work with some of Garden City’s young adults to continue to educate everyone on the history of our village!

TGCHS AWARDS 2023 GARDNER GRANT TO GARDEN CITY YOUNG SCHOLAR

The Garden City Historical Society is thrilled to announce the award of the
Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to Garden City High School Senior,
Ryan Sievers!
The Garden City Historical Society selected Ryan Sievers as a candidate for this prestigious award, as they were all impressed with how hard working, intelligent, passionate, and personable she was over the last 2 years. Congratulations to Ryan Sievers on all her efforts and for being selected as our first winner!

The Gardiner Grant is a $1,500 grant that is awarded to a Young Scholar (between the ages of 15-22), who has completed 100 hours of service. This past year the Garden City Historical Society was able to secure one and selected Ryan Sievers, a recent graduate of Garden City High School, and a Nassau County Girl Scout who is passionate about her community and its rich history. In 2022, she took this passion and helped educate others in the community about the importance of preserving the history of Garden City for future generations, which included interviewing The Garden City Historical Society’s President, Bill Garry.

Through this work, she was awarded the Girls Scout Gold Award. Continuing those efforts this year, Ryan played an important role in the ongoing effort to convert our collection of items (historical photos, articles, etc. of Garden City), for greater distribution to the Garden City community and beyond. This included scanning and converting over 900 items to “tiff” files, supplementing the 1362 files already in the digital collection. Ryan worked with both Brian Pinnola, Chair of the Collections Committee, and Bill Bellmer, our Village Historian to complete this tedious effort.
The Garden City Historical Society wishes to express their gratitude to the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation for this marvelous opportunity to work with some of Garden City’s young adults on a much-needed project for our village!
